Therapeutic Riding Program
Diana Melvin has
always been a teacher professionally and, in recent years, riding
lessons and rodeo coaching have expanded greatly. Since she was
17 and a summer 4-H assistant she has provided instruction for
children wanting to experience horses and riding.
When the
Melvin's were foster parents to several children they quickly saw
the benefits that the horses provided the youngsters in their
care. That, in conjunction with the benefits they saw with their
own children, led them to pursue the formation of a non-profit
Therapeutic Riding Program. Each week, Diana, family members,
and volunteers provide 30-40 children with instruction and
quality time with horses.
Diana comments, “The horse really
does facilitate some incredible growth and confidence building.
The lessons are very rewarding to watch the bonding and enjoyment
that the kids get from riding.”
The riding center, Dakota Horse
Stars Therapeutic Riding Center, is a 501(c)3 organization, and
is supported by the Capital Area United Way which provides
scholarships for persons wanting to enjoy horseback riding as
therapy. Diana’s Master’s Degree is in guidance and counseling,
and she especially enjoys working with troubled youngsters or
children who struggle with learning. She is quick to credit her
family and friends with thanks for assisting with the continuous
stream of children and adults who are seeking horseback riding
as a positive activity in their life.
