Jace
Melvin (far right) of Fort Pierre poses with the saddle he
received for winning at the 2005 State 4-H Rodeo Finals, held in
Fort Pierre.
Melvin tied for the All-Around
Cowboy and won the Goat-Tying competition, taking home two
championship saddles. In addition, he was appointed to the first
all-star rodeo team sponsored by the National High School Rodeo
Association Wrangler Division - the newest junior high rodeo
program in the US. The all star team is selected by NHSRA-WD
officials based on their leadership, academics and athletic
achievements. As members of the 2005-06 team, they
represent the sport of rodeo as goodwill ambassadors.
Wrangler, Inc. sponsors this new youth event; each member
receives an official membership certificate and competition
apparel - jeans and embroidered shirts.
Jace, 13, said he likes competing
in breakaway roping the most because it requires speed and
quickness to win. At the state finals, Melvin placed
fourth in average time at breakaway roping.
